Singapore's lunar series has run continuously since 1967, making it one of the longest-unbroken national lunar coinage programs in the world. The 2004 Monkey issue falls in the ninth cycle of that series, a year that also marked the twentieth anniversary of the Singapore Mint's independence from the Royal Mint's oversight following full operational autonomy in 1984.
