Liberia's Panda-themed bullion issues from the early 2000s occupy an awkward corner of the numismatic world — technically legal tender of a country that was, in 2003, in the final throes of Charles Taylor's collapsing government and a devastating civil war. The notion of a Liberian mint striking commemorative gold at that moment is misleading; these were produced entirely by foreign minting contractors, primarily for the collector export market, with no meaningful domestic circulation intended or possible.
At 0.730 g, the gold content is minimal enough that bullion value has never driven demand. The series lives or dies on collector interest alone.
