October 12, 1492 is the date Columbus first made landfall in the Bahamas — most likely at the island the Lucayan people called Guanahani, which Columbus renamed San Salvador. The exact island remains disputed, with at least nine sites proposed by scholars over the decades. This coin was issued for the 1992 quincentenary run-up, struck three years ahead of the anniversary in the pattern common to collector series of the period.
