Reverse description Central device depicts a kangaroo in high relief, standing upright on rocky ground and facing left, modelled after the original design used on the historic Port Phillip half-sovereign pattern of 1853. The central motif is framed within a smooth inner circle, to the right of which appears the fractional denomination 1/2 within a smaller incuse circle. The inscription 1/4 oz .9999 Au is positioned to the left of the kangaroo within the inner field, while the commemorative dates 1853 - 2023 appear in the exergue below. The broad outer border features an elaborate engine-turned guilloche or crosshatch pattern, with the legend PORT PHILLIP arching across the top and AUSTRALIA arching across the bottom in large incuse letters through the decorative border.
