Reverse description Highly detailed antique-finish depiction of the Heungnyemun Gate, the second southern gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, rendered in finely engraved high relief and occupying the central and lower field. The two-tiered gate structure is shown frontally, with three arched passageways at its base each incorporating inlaid red Tiffany glass panels featuring swirling cloud motifs and a central seal in silver relief. Above the gate, the Hangul legend '경복궁' appears at the top of the field, followed below by the Latin legend 'GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE' in two lines.

Additional information

Gyeongbokgung Palace was destroyed twice — by Japanese forces during the Imjin War in 1592, then again systematically during the Japanese colonial occupation beginning in 1910, when the Government-General building was deliberately erected to block the palace's main gate. Reconstruction of the northern Seoul complex began only in 1990 and remains unfinished.

Palau has issued coin series under licensing arrangements for decades, functioning effectively as a mint-for-hire jurisdiction with no organic connection to the subjects depicted.
