Additional information

The USS Hornet (CV-12) is best known for recovering the Apollo 11 astronauts in July 1969, but the ship earned its most significant combat record earlier — it flew strikes during the Vietnam War and, before that, served in the Pacific during the Korean conflict. The Essex-class carrier was commissioned in 1943, too late for the battle actions of her predecessor CV-8, which was sunk at Santa Cruz. Solomon Islands has geographical claim to the story: the original Hornet went down in their waters.
