| Additional information |
The spectacled bear — the only bear species native to South America — had no particular connection to the British Virgin Islands, whose wildlife and geography are purely Caribbean. This coin belongs to a wave of WWF-licensed conservation issues produced through the early 1990s, in which dozens of small dependent territories lent their issuing authority to themed collector series bearing no organic relationship to the subject matter. The arrangement was commercially effective; the ecological relevance was essentially nil.
