Additional information

The VS-300 made its untethered first flight on May 13, 1940, at Stratford, Connecticut, with Igor Sikorsky himself at the controls — wearing his trademark fedora. That single-main-rotor configuration, which Sikorsky settled on after abandoning a coaxial design, became the template for virtually every helicopter built since. The Solomon Islands issued this piece as part of a broader aviation pioneers series, a common vehicle for commemorative silver in the early 2000s.
