The piedfort format — double the standard planchet thickness — originated in medieval France as a way to produce presentation-quality strikes for assay verification and royal gifts. Canada adopted the format for collector issues decades ago, but the combination with selective gold plating is a strictly modern production technique, applied here by galvanic deposition to isolate specific design elements against the frosted silver fields.
The polar bear motif on Canadian currency traces directly to the 1935 dollar, which marked the first appearance of wildlife on a Canadian circulation coin.
