This piece is one of a sprawling series of Cook Islands gold issues produced throughout the 1990s by the New Zealand-administered territory, largely marketed to collectors rather than circulated domestically. The Olympic National Park on Washington's Olympic Peninsula was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, one of the earlier American nominations under that program.
