Additional information

Hernando Pizarro was the only one of the four Pizarro brothers who conquered Peru to die of old age — a fact that required surviving nearly twenty years imprisoned in the castle of La Mota after returning to Spain in 1540. His detention stemmed from the execution of Diego de Almagro, Francisco's former partner, whose son's faction eventually brought enough pressure on the crown to see Hernando jailed without formal trial.

The British Virgin Islands issued extensively in this period under license arrangements that had little to do with local monetary need.
