Issued to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 landfall, the BVI joined a crowded field of commemorative programs that year — nearly every Caribbean territory with minting authority produced silver issues for the anniversary. The British Virgin Islands, whose own colonial history traces directly to the plantation economy that followed European contact, had particular reason to participate, though the commemoratives were produced for export and collector sale rather than any domestic circulation.
