Additional information

Issued for the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, this coin commemorates one of the more uncomfortable chapters in that story: Columbus's third voyage ended with his arrest in 1500 by Francisco de Bobadilla, the newly appointed royal governor of Hispaniola, who shipped him back to Spain in chains following reports of tyrannical governance. Ferdinand and Isabella released him within six weeks, but his titles were never fully restored.
