Arnold Palmer won the 1961 and 1962 British Opens at Royal Birkdale and Troon respectively, doing more than any other American to revive transatlantic interest in links golf during that period. His commercial empire — built largely through agent Mark McCormack and IMG — made him the template for every athlete-turned-brand that followed. Solomon Islands has issued commemorative gold in his name despite no meaningful connection between Palmer and the Pacific nation; the issuer here is effectively a licensing vehicle, as Honiara regularly sells its minting authority to third-party distributors targeting collector markets.
