Additional information

The Perth Mint's annual lunar bullion series traces its commercial origins to 1996, when the mint quietly displaced the Royal Australian Mint as Australia's primary producer of precious metal investment coinage for Asian markets — particularly Hong Kong and mainland China, where ox-year pieces carry demand well beyond their bullion value. The 2021 issue arrived during a period of acute gold buying pressure, with spot prices still elevated from the 2020 pandemic spike.

Jody Clark's sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 2015, appears here for one of its final lunar applications before the queen's death in September 2022.
