Additional information

The "Australian Sovereign" designation carries real weight here. When the Sydney Mint struck the first Australian-produced sovereigns in 1855, it was the first branch of the Royal Mint to operate outside Britain — a logistical necessity driven by the gold rushes flooding New South Wales with raw metal that had no local processing infrastructure. The 165th anniversary calculation runs from that 1855 date.

Perth Mint, now wholly state-owned and formally separated from Royal Mint oversight since 1970, issues these under Australian legal tender authority rather than as Royal Mint product.
