Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987, making Perth one of the earliest sovereign mints to issue platinum bullion coins in direct competition with the Canadian Maple Leaf. The switch to Elizabeth II's fourth portrait — the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy adopted by Australia in 1999 — means pieces from this two-year window exist with either the third or fourth portrait depending on striking date, a distinction KM#458 alone doesn't resolve for the collector.
