The Australian Nugget series, launched in 1986 by the Perth Mint to compete directly with the South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf, shifted to an annually changing reverse design beginning in 1989 — a deliberate marketing distinction that transformed the series into a de facto annual collectible rather than a pure bullion product. The quarter-ounce denomination has historically seen lower mintages than its one-ounce counterpart, as institutional bullion buyers overwhelmingly favor the larger format.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, introduced on Australian coinage in 1999, first appeared on this series at the turn of the millennium.
