Reverse description Central left-facing portrait bust of Diana, Princess of Wales, wearing a tiara, pearl drop earrings, and a pearl necklace, rendered in finely detailed high relief by Stuart Devlin. The portrait is framed within an ornate decorative border of repeating crown and scroll motifs. The legend ELIZABETH II 40TH ANNIVERSARY arcs around the upper portion of the border, commemorating the 40th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession. The denomination 25 DOLLARS is inscribed in two lines at the base of the inner field, beneath the portrait. The engraver's initials SD appear discretely at the lower right of the bust truncation.

Additional information

This piece belongs to a Royal Australian Mint series issued in the years when Diana's public image was still largely intact — 1992 being the year Andrew Morton's biography broke, and the same year the Prince and Princess of Wales formally separated. Whether the timing was coincidental or the Mint simply couldn't pull the issue without political embarrassment is unrecorded, but the coin went ahead regardless.
