Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987, making Perth one of the earliest government mints to issue a bullion platinum coin for international investment markets. The program competed directly with the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle platinum programs, and the fractional denominations — including this quarter-ounce piece — were specifically sized to attract buyers priced out of the one-ounce format. The koala design changes annually, a deliberate policy to encourage year-by-year collecting rather than simple bullion accumulation.
The .9995 fineness fractionally exceeds the .9990 purity of several competing issues — a marketing distinction Perth has maintained across the series.
