The Australian Kangaroo bullion series launched in 1986 under the name "Nugget," initially featuring gold nugget reverses before switching to kangaroo designs in 1989 — a change driven by poor international name recognition against established rivals like the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. The Perth Mint, operating independently from the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, holds the legal authority to produce these coins under its own statutory framework, a distinction that still occasionally confuses buyers.
The .9999 fineness, introduced to undercut the Maple Leaf's then-dominant purity claim, required significant refining investment at the Perth facility.
