Additional information

Australia's Kangaroo bullion program launched in 1986 as the Gold Nugget series, with coins depicting actual gold nugget finds. The switch to kangaroo reverse designs beginning with the 1989 issue followed poor international recognition — buyers outside Australia had little attachment to nugget imagery, while the kangaroo carried instant national identification. The program also introduced annual reverse changes, a deliberate policy to encourage collector acquisition beyond purely weight-based demand.

The .9999 fineness was a direct commercial challenge to the Krugerrand's .9167 standard, positioning Perth's product as the purer alternative in a crowded bullion market.
