The 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's landfall generated an enormous wave of commemorative coinage across the Caribbean, and the Bahamas had stronger claim than most to issue one — San Salvador Island, within its territory, is among the most credible candidates for Columbus's first New World anchorage on October 12, 1492. The competing claims of Samana Cay and others have never been fully settled, but San Salvador has held the official designation since 1926.
At 136 grams and 63 millimeters, this is a serious bullion-weight piece rather than a token gesture — one of the larger silver issues in the Bahamian commemorative program of that decade.
