One of dozens of nearly identical micro-gold issues Liberia produced in the early 2000s through overseas minting contractors, this piece has no meaningful connection to Liberia's history or economy — Darwin never visited West Africa, and the country had no particular reason to honor him beyond the commercial appeal of his name to collectors. The series flooded the market and depressed secondary values almost immediately.
