| Obverse description | The arms of Fiji displayed centrally, comprising a quartered shield bearing sugar canes, a coconut palm, a dove of peace, and a British lion passant holding a cocoa pod, surmounted by a traditional Fijian canoe (drua). Two Fijian warriors in traditional dress serve as supporters, the dexter holding a spear and the sinister holding a tabua (whale's tooth). Fiji has issued commemorative silver in FIFA's name repeatedly, and this 2014 World Cup piece is one of dozens of similar issues produced by mints across the Pacific island nations under licensing arrangements with FIFA — the Reserve Bank lending its authority while the commercial appeal did the actual work. Brazil's tournament was the first World Cup hosted in South America since Argentina in 1978, and it came with considerable political turbulence, including widespread street protests against the cost of stadiums built at public expense.
