Fiji's 18-karat gold commemorative issues of this period were produced in relatively small quantities through the Perth Mint, which held the contract for Fiji's precious metal coinage during the late Commonwealth era. The .750 fineness is an unusual choice — most sovereign gold issues of the period ran at .900 or .9999 — and reflects a deliberate cost-bracketing decision aimed at a collector market rather than any bullion function.
