Andorra's Olympic coinage of the 1990s was largely a revenue exercise — the principality had no Olympic team presence to speak of and used the Atlanta 1996 licensing window to produce collectible issues for the European numismatic market well ahead of the Games. Joan Martí i Alanis, the Episcopal Co-Prince from 1971 to 2003, appears here in his capacity as one of Andorra's two feudal co-sovereigns, a constitutional arrangement dating to a 1278 paréage that has never been formally abolished.
The .583 fineness — 14-karat — was the standard chosen for Andorran gold issues of this period to keep production costs low relative to face value.
