The 1988 paréage series commemorates the 700th anniversary of the 1288 agreement that established Andorra's unique co-sovereignty arrangement — a feudal compact between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix that, through inheritance, eventually passed to the King of France and has continued, in modified form, to the present day. Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell from 1971 to 2003, making him one of the longest-serving Co-Princes in the arrangement's history.
The KM#44.1 and 44.2 variants differ in edge treatment — one plain, one reeded — a production distinction worth confirming before cataloging.
