Andorra's gold coinage in this period was issued under the authority of the Co-Princes — jointly held by the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France — an arrangement dating to a 1278 pareatge that has never been formally dissolved. The ecclesiastical dimension of that dual sovereignty made devotional subjects a recurring choice for commemorative issues from the Principality.
