Reverse description A dignified half-length effigy of Charlemagne (Carolus Magnus) facing left, depicted in imperial regalia consisting of an ermine-trimmed mantle and a jewelled crown surmounted by a cross. In his left hand he holds an orb topped with a cross pattee, and in his right hand he grasps an elaborately ornamented sceptre. A small tower or turret emblem is visible at lower right in the field. The legend CAROLUS MAGNUS is arranged in two arcing lines flanking the portrait at left and right respectively, within a beaded rim.
