Andorra's gold coinage has long been tied to its unusual constitutional arrangement — the country's two co-princes, the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state, reflect a medieval ecclesiastical compromise that persisted into the modern era and gives religious themes on Andorran issues a pointed institutional logic rather than mere decorative convention. The Episcopal co-principality traces directly to a 1278 paréage agreement.
