| Obverse description | The obverse features the second coat of arms of Costa Rica at center, depicting three volcanic peaks rising above a valley and a sailing vessel on the Caribbean Sea, flanked by seven stars representing the seven provinces. The shield is surmounted by a rising sun and framed by ornamental scrollwork. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA reads along the upper periphery, with AMERICA CENTRAL implied by context, and the date 2005 appears at the bottom of the field. A beaded border encircles the entire design. |

Costa Rica's 25 colón denomination went through a quiet but telling series of material substitutions in the early 2000s as the colón's purchasing power eroded — the move to brass-plated steel was a cost-reduction measure, not an aesthetic one. The non-magnetic variant of KM#229b circulated alongside a magnetically distinct version, a consequence of inconsistent steel core sourcing rather than any deliberate policy change.
