Additional information

Costa Rica's switch to brass-plated steel for this denomination in the mid-1990s was a direct response to chronic metal theft and melting of the earlier brass-alloy pieces, whose intrinsic value had crept uncomfortably close to face value amid persistent colón depreciation. The magnetic core made the substitution immediately detectable to vending machines and sorters without requiring a redesign.

KM#229 is distinguished from its non-magnetic predecessor by the steel substrate alone — a distinction invisible to casual inspection but critical to attribution.
