Additional information

Celia Cruz, the Cuban-born "Queen of Salsa," became the first Afro-Latina woman honored on a circulating U.S. quarter. She never obtained U.S. citizenship until 1961, having fled Cuba after Castro's revolution made her return impossible — she was reportedly denied permission to attend her own mother's funeral in Havana in 1962. The American Women Quarters Program, authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, created the opening for her inclusion alongside four other honorees that year.

The .999 silver collector version strikes a harder surface than the clad circulation issue, preserving finer detail in the portrait relief.
