Vint Hill Farms Station in Warrenton, Virginia operated as a highly classified Army signals intelligence facility during the war — one of the first U.S. installations to intercept Axis communications. The Officers' Open Mess scrip was a practical internal control measure, keeping currency use self-contained within a base whose population and purpose were not publicly acknowledged.
The yellow paper and perforation security feature are modest by any standard, but the issuer's obscurity is the real distinguishing factor here. Very few collectors have pursued WWII military mess scrip systematically, and Vint Hill pieces surface rarely.
