Fort Crook, Nebraska held German prisoners of war from 1943 through the final repatriation in 1946. Canteen scrip like this 25-cent piece was a deliberate policy instrument — the U.S. Army issued camp currency to prevent prisoners from accumulating legal tender that could fund escape attempts or black-market dealings with the local civilian population.
Fort Crook scrip is among the rarer surviving examples of American PoW camp issues, partly because most was destroyed or simply discarded at repatriation. The camp itself was deactivated and redesignated — it became Offutt Air Force Base in 1948.
