In 1999, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a series of 25-cent pieces celebrating the millennium, each reverse paired with the standard Dora de Pédery-Hunt effigy obverse. A small number of coins escaped quality control bearing the wrong obverse — the older, smaller-effigy portrait intended for a different denomination — creating what collectors classify as a mule. The "September" designation refers to the specific monthly millennium reverse matched to this mismatched obverse, allowing collectors to distinguish it within the twelve-issue series.
