Additional information

The 2004 Santa Claus quarter was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's early push into seasonal coloured coinage, a program that generated significant collector demand but also drew criticism from purists who argued the Mint was prioritizing novelty revenue over numismatic integrity. The coloring was applied after striking using a pad-printing process the RCM had only recently adopted for circulation-format coins.

Production was intended for the gift and novelty market rather than general circulation, which is why surviving examples in pristine condition are far more common than worn ones.
