The 1992 Canadian provincial quarter series was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Confederation, with each province and territory receiving its own reverse design. Prince Edward Island's inclusion carried particular historical weight — the island had actually declined to join Confederation in 1867, only entering the Dominion in 1873 after the federal government agreed to assume its railway debt and guarantee steam communication with the mainland.
The .925 silver proof version, distinguished from the standard nickel circulation strike by KM#222a, was produced exclusively for collector sets.
