This piece is one of twelve provincial and territorial reverse designs issued in 1992 to mark the 125th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. Nova Scotia entered Confederation in 1867 as one of the four founding provinces, though its legislature had actually passed a resolution against joining — anti-Confederation sentiment ran deep enough that Joseph Howe led a repeal movement to Westminster the following year and failed.
The series was struck entirely in nickel rather than the copper-nickel alloy adopted for regular circulation coinage in 1968, a deliberate choice for the commemorative run.
