Part of the 1992 provincial and territorial series issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, this piece represents one of thirteen designs released simultaneously — an ambitious program that flooded circulation channels and ensured most examples were pulled from change and saved almost immediately. Survivorship in mint state is consequently high relative to actual mintage figures.
The Northwest Territories at the time still included what would become Nunavut, partitioned off in 1999.
