Reverse description Central device depicting 'The Log Drive,' a scene commemorating the March milestone of Canada's millennium series, showing loggers driving timber down a river — a motif emblematic of Canada's historic forestry and river-drive industry. The design is attributed to Stan Witten and occupies the primary field of the reverse. Surrounding the central composition, the country name 'CANADA' appears along with the bilingual date inscription 'MARCH 1999 MARS,' acknowledging both English and French, Canada's official languages. The mintmark 'ML' appears within the reverse legend.

Additional information

The 1999 "March" quarter was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's twelve-coin Millennium Series, one coin released each month throughout the year. The program was a deliberate effort to drive collector interest during the lead-up to the year 2000, and it worked — sets sold briskly enough that the RCM issued both circulation strikes and special matte-finish collector versions. March's theme honored the country's natural heritage, though the series as a whole was conceived and approved with unusual speed given the typical multi-year design pipeline for Canadian coinage.
