Issued as part of the Royal Canadian Mint's colored circulation series — a program that began experimentally with the 2004 poppy quarter — this hockey piece used a dry-transfer ink process applied directly to struck planchets, a technique the RCM spent years refining to survive casual pocket wear. The KM#953a suffix distinguishes the colored variant from the uncolored 953, both struck for general circulation rather than collector sets.
