Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's "NHL Coin" program, this 25-cent piece was one of several sport-themed quarters issued during a period when the Mint was aggressively expanding its collector circulation series. Ice hockey's place in Canadian coinage is hardly incidental — the sport had already appeared on a 1955 commemorative and was central to the Mint's strategy of producing coins Canadians might actually pull from their pockets and notice.
