The British Virgin Islands began issuing distinctive wildlife and marine-themed collector coinage in the late 1970s and early 1980s largely as a revenue mechanism — these pieces were never intended for general circulation and were sold directly to collectors and tourists. The blue marlin series capitalized on the BVI's reputation as a premier big-game fishing destination, particularly around Tortola and Virgin Gorda, where annual tournaments drew serious international sport fishermen.
The .925 silver proof version runs parallel to a standard cupro-nickel circulation strike under the same KM catalogue sequence.
