Obverse description The obverse bears the fourth definitive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, depicting the Queen in right-facing profile as a mature woman of approximately 77 years of age, bare-headed, wearing a necklace and drop earrings. The legend ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA arcs along the upper periphery of the field, with the denomination implied by the reverse. The portrait is rendered in a refined, naturalistic style consistent with official Canadian coinage from 2003 onward.

Reverse description The reverse features a full-colour depiction of an adult barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) perched at the rim of a mud-and-straw nest, rendered in vivid naturalistic tones with the bird's characteristic iridescent steel-blue upperparts, rufous-orange throat and forehead, and deeply forked tail clearly delineated. The colourized image is centrally positioned within a plain inner circle, with the legend CANADA arcing along the upper periphery and the denomination 25 CENTS together with the date 2011 arranged along the lower periphery, all in raised lettering on the nickel-plated steel field. This issue is the eighth coin in the Royal Canadian Mint's Birds of Canada coloured quarter series.
