Additional information

The RCM logo added to the obverse during this period reflected a broader institutional push by the Mint to brand its circulating coinage following its conversion to a fully commercial Crown corporation in 1969 — a status that left it dependent on contract revenue rather than government subsidy. The Susanna Blunt portrait, introduced in 2003, was the first Canadian effigy selected through a public competition rather than appointed through official channels.

Steel planchets replaced nickel in 2000, driven by rising commodity costs. The transition was largely invisible to the public but required retooling of vending infrastructure across the country.
