Additional information

The fractional Gold Maple Leaf series was introduced in 1982, making Canada one of the first sovereign mints to offer gold bullion in sub-one-ounce denominations. This 0.5 g piece sits at the extreme small end of that range — a format driven by retail demand for accessible entry-point bullion rather than any monetary policy consideration. The .9999 fineness, a standard the RCM pioneered and still uses as a marketing differentiator, requires exceptionally refined gold that most national mints did not match until decades later.
