Commissioned Officers' Mess tokens in paper form were a wartime expedient used at various Pacific installations to manage canteen transactions without drawing on scarce coinage. Des-Cru-Pac — Destroyers, Cruisers, Pacific — was a U.S. Navy command designation active during the Second World War, and mess scrip of this kind circulated only within the tight confines of officer club facilities ashore.
The extreme dimensions made counterfeiting by enlisted men essentially pointless; the real control was social, not cryptographic.
