| Reverse description | The central field features a Numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus), the fauna emblem of Western Australia, striding across a rocky surface framed by native Australian flora including Kangaroo Paw and Banksia. A Black Swan (Cygnus atratus), the state bird of Western Australia, is depicted in the upper left field, gliding upon water with wings partially raised. The denomination numeral '25' appears in bold relief in the lower centre, and the legend 'WESTERN AUSTRALIA' is inscribed on a ribbon banner beneath. | Additional information |
Australia's federation in 1901 was far from inevitable — Western Australia held a referendum on joining only after significant pressure, including a threatened secession movement by the goldfields population who wanted to form their own separate colony if Perth refused to sign on. They joined by a wide margin, but the internal fracture lines were real. The 125th anniversary falls in 2026, the same year this coin enters circulation.
